The Hellenic Accounting and Auditing Standards Oversight Board (HAASOB) held an event titled “A New Era in the Auditing Profession: Requirements and Challenges” on November 13, 2024, in Athens. The event was welcomed and introduced by the Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Thanasis Bouras.
HAASOB’s Chairman, Panagiotis Giannopoulos, emphasized the importance and contribution of HAASOB and the audit profession in transforming the Greek economy into a sustainable one. He also highlighted the challenges the audit profession is facing and referred to issues of concern for supervisory authorities both at the European and international levels.
The event also featured representatives from the U.S. Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), HAASOB’s counterpart supervisory authority, with which HAASOB has been collaborating since 2015 on audit matters and exchange of know how. Omid Haraf, Head of Staff at the PCAOB, presented updates on various auditing topics. This was followed by a presentation by Professor Phoebe Koundouri from the Athens University of Economics and Business, entitled “Creating Value and Profit via the ESG Framework.”
The event concluded with a discussion panel featuring representatives from audit firms who exchanged views on key audit topics, including issues related to the CSRD, new technologies in auditing, and the attractiveness of the audit profession.
Through this event, HAASOB aimed to communicate the emerging challenges and requirements to professionals in the audit field, with the goal of improving audit quality and thereby safeguarding investor interests.
